About Michelle Morris

About Michelle Morris, LPC — Imago Couples Therapist

I don't rescue people. I teach them to see clearly. Therapy isn't about comfort. It's about developing the capacity to face what's actually happening—individually and in your relationships—and learning the skills to change it.

Why couples stay stuck—and how I help them move

Most couples who find me have already tried talking it out, reading the books, maybe even sitting through therapy that felt more like refereeing than real change. They're smart, capable people who can solve almost any problem—except the one between them.

That's because relationship conflict isn't a logic problem. It's a nervous-system problem. The patterns that drive your fights were wired long before you met your partner—often in childhood, when you learned which parts of yourself were safe to show and which needed to be hidden.

I use the Imago Relationship Therapy method—a structured, evidence-based approach grounded in neuroscience and attachment theory—to help couples see what's actually driving their conflict. Not the surface-level arguments, but the deeper dynamics underneath.

This work isn't about finding out who's right. It's about building the capacity to truly hear each other—and to be heard—so you can stop repeating the same exhausting cycle and start creating something different.

    What is Imago

How Childhood Shows Up in Adulthood

    You Complete Me

    My philosophy

You are responsible for your experience. Not your partner. Not your childhood. You. That doesn't mean those influences don't matter—they matter enormously. But waiting for circumstances to change before you can feel different is a trap.

Agency isn't given. It's developed. Most couples come to therapy feeling stuck, victimized by their partner's behavior or their own reactions. The work is learning to see your choices—even in moments when it feels like you have none.

I won't rescue you. I'm not here to take sides, validate one partner over another, or tell you what to do. I'm here to help you both see what's actually happening beneath your conflicts—and build the skills to navigate differently.

Science, not mysticism. The brain is a pattern-recognition machine. Your relationship struggles aren't random—they're predictable outputs of neural pathways built over decades. That's not a metaphor. It's biology. And biology can be influenced.

    Why understanding your brain matters

Here's something most people don't know: the olfactory system (smell) bypasses the rational brain entirely and connects directly to the amygdala—your emotional alarm system.

That's why a certain cologne can trigger a trauma response before you consciously recognize the smell. Your body reacts before your mind catches up. This same mechanism operates constantly in relationships: your partner's tone, posture, or word choice can activate threat responses wired in childhood.

Understanding this changes everything. When you realize your reaction isn't about what your partner just said—but about neural pathways formed decades ago—you stop fighting the wrong battle. The IMAGO method is designed specifically to interrupt these unconscious patterns and create new ones.

    Background

I've spent over three decades working with people in crisis. Early in my career, I directed programs at psychiatric hospitals, where the stakes were immediate and the margin for error was zero. That environment teaches you quickly what actually works versus what sounds good in textbooks.

From gang-involved youth to couples on the brink of divorce, every population I've worked with has reinforced the same lesson: lasting change requires approaches that address root causes, not just symptoms.

Today, I mainly see couples but also do work with many individuals. I'm a member of IMAGO International, teaching other therapists the method I use daily in my own practice, and a leading member of GRITS (Georgia Regional Imago Therapists of the Southeast).
